So it's either a broken shifter/blocker rings/shift forks/or maybe welded internals.

Well i'll be able to say about the shifter very soon but either way this better not be expensive because the tranny was working just fine.

My guess was a messed up slider that could have damage the shaft.

As for distracting Katie i'm sure there are several people who would be up for that job.
