Two motorcycle riders hospitalized in collision
CLEARWATER - A motorcyclist and his passenger were hospitalized Sunday after a collision with a car that threw them 100 feet on State Road 580. The westbound motorcycle collided with an eastbound Mercedes-Benz driven by John Filerino, 81, who was turning into his neighborhood.
The motorcycle riders were taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. The driver of the 2006 Suzuki, Steven A. Craft, 36, wasn't wearing a helmet, Clearwater police spokesman Wayne Shelor said. His passenger, Mary Dyerly, 32, was.
On Sunday night, she was in satisfactory condition and Craft was in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Filerino wasn't hurt.
Craft and Dyerly were stopped at SR 580 and Countryside Boulevard. When the light turned green, Craft took off, popping a wheelie. At the same time, Filerino was turning left.
No charges were filed Sunday night, though they may be later, Shelor said
