Like was said above Richmond gears tend to whine a little. If it isn't a whine your hearing and it's more like a grinding sound you might have a problem. Did you replace the crush sleeve? If you did, you might have to take it back to your friend and make sure it's still tight. Sometimes they don't crush all the way and need to be checked. If that's ok you could have a bad pinion bearing. There are a number of things it could be.
