Depends how often you ride. I bought my bike in August with 0 miles. She's going to roll over 10,000 this weekend. I have had to do a LOT of maintenance due to the amount of riding I do. ATLEAST once a week I'm cleaning/lubing/adjusting the chain. Once a month I change the oil. Every 2 months I'm changing the rear tire. 1 month ago (5 months into owning the bike) I had to replace the spark plugs (@7500 miles). In another month or so, the airfilter's going to have to be replaced (@ 11,000 miles). Oh, and it's hard as hell to keep it clean and shiny when you ride it as often as I do.
