suspensions, and revised exterior styling. Both the Impala sedan and the Monte Carlo coupe are offered in LS, LT 3.5, LT 3.9, LTZ, and sporty SS trim. LS and LT 3.5 models come with a 211-hp 3.5-liter V6, up 30 hp from 2005's base engine. LT 3.9 and LTZ models have a 242-hp 3.9-liter V6. SS models get a 303-hp V8 with GM's Active Fuel Management, which deactivates four cylinders under light throttle conditions to save fuel. All come with a 4-speed automatic transmission. SS models have sport suspension and 18-inch wheels; others get 16- or 17, depending on model.

Available for all Impala models except SS is a front bench seat for 6-passenger seating. SS and all Monte Carlos come only with buckets. Head-protecting curtain side airbags are standard on Impala. They are not available for Monte Carlo, but front torso side airbags are optional. ABS and traction control, and a tire-pressure monitor are available. GM's OnStar Assistance is standard. Available are a remote starter that turns the engine on via the keyfob, leather upholstery, and satellite radio. We have not yet tested the 2006 Monte Carlo.
