the threaded rod you're talking about is a inner tie rod. The outer tie rod screws on to that and goes in to the spindle to steer the car.

Ball joints: Mustangs only have lower ball joints, it is what comes up though the lower control arm in to the bottom of the spindle. hope this helps...
