You are confusing two different things. Cam timing is one thing and ignition timing is a totally seperate thing although, they are related. Sounds like your off a tooth or two on your CAM TIMING. This causes the hesitation and bucking you've described. Line up the white tdc mark on the crank pulley with the marks on the lower belt cover and make sure your cam arrow faces up and the two side ticks each line up with a mark on the upper timing cover. You can fix the ignition timing by just turning your distributor towards the front of the car a little.
