While we know how tough it is to find a nice one, the insurance company is going to go by book value which will be far less than a nice replacement will be. Another thing Mars has going against him is the mileage. Even if his car was very nice, the insurance company is going to look at cars with comperable mileage which probably won't be as nice as his.
Mars, I'd start looking through the Corral and auto trader and wherever else you can to get values of cars similar in condition to yours. Save pictures, descriptions, etc. You'll need this to go to the bargaining table against them. Not saying it will work, but it will at least help. Be prepared to get a lawyer and fight them over this though.
