I want to get rid of some of the stink. From talking to some people you don't lose much of the sound except on the top end, i.e. the "raspiness". So I should still have most of the sound.

Yes there is some sucking in sound. Mine is quite loud as the bolt @ 6 o clock on the dp (ie the center one underneath) keeps coming loose. When I tighten that up the sound is greatly reduced. As far as the heatshielding I'll take pics of it before I take it off and send 'em to ya as well as post 'em. It's f/s by the way.
