by the clutch pedal there is a sensor and when the clutch is depressed all the way it pushes that sensor up which will allow the starter to start thats what happend to my bro's hatch.
easy way to check for this:
turn the key on and then put 12v to the starter relay (little black wire on the starter). if thats your problem this will tell ya.
oh and dont forget to put it in neutral
