The car was never totalled and has the original clean title like nothing ever happened despite $25k of damage. The only time a car will be tagged by a service like CarFax is when the vehicle has been totalled out by the insurance company. Usually what will happen after the vehicle is totalled is someone will purchase the vehicle from the insurance company on the spot or at auction. The vehicle will be repaired and a salvage title will be issued at which only at this point would it be road going and throw a flag in CarFax.

I know someone that has been in over five accidents last time I talked to him. These accidents are ranging from minor to all the airbags blowing open and the car is still clean as crap on a CarFax report.

The only thing I found which might or might not be helpful in purchasing a used Subaru is check the service history on the vehicle. If you looked at the service history of the above vehicle you would know something is clearly not right. The VIN number was apparently required by the dealership to order the needed parts for the repairs. There is another sign in the service history showing several minor "warrenty" repairs at various dealerships across the east coast to the vehicle after it was pawned off to what I'm guessing multiple unsuspecting owners. I'm fairly sure the system is linked between dealerships and any friendly employee at a Subaru dealership should be able to run this report.
