Toyota isn't an American car company, nor will they become anything like one. Look at Ford and GM and why they can't figure out why they are performing so badly, and you should see.
The 4.3 is actually a completely different engine all together, and just about as bulletproof as the 4L. Toyota saw the mistake they made that I warned about in the above post and reversed the pump and altenator. If your theory was correct and was going to tweak stuff to make sure they'd still get money off repairs, they would have left the orientation the same.
Hopefully Toyota will never change it's additude towards making sound, reliable, and sound quality vehicles. My next vehicle is either going to be a Toyota or Lexus because of this fact.
