I know why other events charge more (in this case, you are referring to DGTrials). Between track rental and Insurance, it costs DGT somewhere around let's say $2750 or so. IF 40 drivers paid, DGTrials would make $3600. Thats $850 they make per event! Minus gas to carry there equipment, hotel rooms when needed for volunteer staff, website support, the cost of maintaining themselves as a sanctioning body, and of course a little left over for the times they don't have 40 (like december which only had 27 drivers) and you have......oh wait, we're negative. Wow. and they still hold events? They must enjoy what they are doing.
Since you want to speak about insurance, lets compare the polices, shall we?
Auburndale, Lakeland, Hialeah, etc. All of these tracks have existing policies that cover them for 'motorsports events'. This is annual coverage at a reasonable rate. Divide this coverage between roundy-round cars, car shows and other things that happen at the venue, and yes, it's cheap.
DGTrials on the other hand, does not own a location. They must purchase insurance on a 'per event' basis adn must also include coverage for the track owners. Also, DGTrials has a policy written specifically for 'Drifting' (yes, such a thing exists). Being that this is a new motorsport, the policies are expensive.
So why doesn't DGTrials just lower the cost and allow more drivers? Maybe because they believe in giving people alot of seat time. YOu would be surprised how many drivers leave an event wishing for more seat time....and there are under 40 drivers. What do you think 75 drivers will think?
