JDM = FAD, since all modders follow trends to begin with, that fact is a given. It is quite hilarious but some Japanese modders go all USDM or EDM. Japanese Direct Market has been addressed quite well in the posts above. For JDM OEM parts, it is mostly for looks.

Why go with amber sidemarkers on your silver car when you can go with clear or smoked markers from Japan. Why try to bake your headlights to remove your corner diffuser or paint your HID ballasts if you can get chrome ballasts and clear diffusers from Japan. It is all about looks and minimal performance when it comes to OEM stuff.

After-market Japan products just offer higher performance and quality for the most part.
