You're right, there are alot of horror stories out there about the transmissions but in all honesty if you aren't trying to beat the piss out of the tranny it should hold up just fine.
I ran countless times at the track and at auto-xs with mine and never had a problem. And I know many other people in the same position as me.
If you're looking for a used WRX with a little bit of punch over stock, and a strong transmission...I know where you can find one.
