If he gets the carburetor rebuilt, and this is just because I was trolling through and noticed the carburetor thing, I had both carburetors on my 86 Prelude rebuilt for around $400 at Hayward's Auto...not sure exactly what street it was on.
I had called EVERYWHERE recommended for carburetor rebuilding, even Pinellas Carburetors (Duh, they do them right?!) And was turned away like I carried the plague. Of course that's because the 86 Prelude appearantly is a bitch to work on as far as the carburetors go. The Honda Dealership wanted around $1400 to put in new carburetors.
My uncle and his friend laughed a good hearty laugh when they saw the dual carburetor setup on the Prelude, saying they'd only seen that on some big trucks and such. Then they tested the engine and told me one of them is bad, because it's dumping fuel.
4-cylinder engine dumping fuel into 2 cylinders was getting 13 mpg. 4-cylinder engine with rebuilt carburetors running properly was getting 26 mpg.
Just a thought if you're looking for a place to get them rebuilt, I thought it was fairly cheap for 2 carburetors to be rebuilt. I thought the guy had gotten my request mixed up or something, so I had to be sure what he was going to do when I brought it in. Sure enough, 2 carburetors, ripped apart and reassembled or whatever they do, back to me within a week or so, and running like...well like it should!
