LT1's are set to run at those temps for emissions reasons only. The LT1 was an evolution of the SBC. AL heads and reverse cooling that flows from the radiator to the heads to the block. The purpose of that is to be able to run a higher compression ratio with out detonation. Getting a properly prepared LT1 to run on pump gas with 12:1 CR can be done with no detonation.
