3) Buy a 1st gen awd that is in really good condition, for 3500 you should be able to get one with a jerrybuilt trany and some decent mods.
Now you have a car that is way faster than your auto 02 will ever be and you have a reliable daily driver.

I would leave your car alone. Just enjoy it for what it is. A nice daily driver.
Save up a little cash and find a decent 1g awd to play with.
If you can work on cars at all yourself or are willing to learn you can find ones for cheap and just freshen them up.
These cars dont bring near the money they used to which is great for someone who wants to build up a cheap fast car. Save up alittle cash and keep your eye open. You will find one for alot less than 3500.
I just picked a really clean GVR-4 for way under 3500.
