The tensioner does not do all the work, look at the timing belt VFAQ diagram to understand. You have to set the tension manually using the eccentric pulley, and the tensioner is there to take up slack when the car is revving.
You are right I forgot about that. It's been a long time since I have done anything like that on a motor. Feel like doing 2 motor swaps and trans swaps with timing belt shit in a couple days with no power tools again?
