I'm with you man, Been ripped off on motors a few times now. If it we're me I would take the oil pan off, and check the rods, and make sure that there is no visible play with the rods. Take the valve cover off and make sure the cams and lifters and suck are all in one peice, and all there. Take off the head, and make sure the valves seat well, and that they haven't been touching the pistons.
I rather get new gaskets, then a whole new motor.
