I personally know guys going low 9's with the same combo.. Either I have a funked up converter or my tranny has some very weid gearset in it.
I will figure it out like I always do so don't fret.
It seems your car improved slightly after the old converter was tweaked, but perhaps with that converter and your application a simple tweak won't work. You may just want to give a brand new converter with a different stall a shot. From my AOD days, I don't seem to recall aftermarket converters retailing too high. Seems like it may be a relatively cheap solution or starting point to figuring out the issue.
