I'm a total motorcycle n00b looking into purchasing a dual sport motorcycle. I first considered a Kawasaki KLR 650 mostly due to the larger engine and good reviews but soon realized that I really want something smaller and more suited towards offroad use. The really tall seat height on the KLR650 was a bit intimidating once I saw it in person so that may or may not be a consideration in my choice.

I suppose what I'm looking for is a street legal capable dirtbike with aftermarket support that is nimble and easy to handle for a n00b while at the same time not too easy to outgrow. I don't plan on using the bike for any type of commuting tasks or interstate travel but will be used on unpopuated paved roads. I don't think it's wise to spend too much money on my first bike so any of the European bikes are out.

Honda XR650-L
Suzuki DR-Z400S
Suzuki DR-650SE (why is this 600 the smaller bike and less expensive compared to the 400? remember, n00b here.)
Yamaha XT225
Kawasaki KLR250
Kawasaki KLR650

Does anyone have any wisdom on which bike might be a better match for my needs?
