If you have the old school shifter control where you have to pull it back to change gears it sounds like the mechanism that allows you to change gears when you pull back on the lever is worn out.
Sometimes its as simple as needing a new roll pin which you can get at nearly any auto parts store. There is always the chance to could be one of the other parts (there are only several) are FUBAR.
The best thing to do is take it apart and look for what does not appear to be 'normal'.
Yeah its the original shifter (no tilt column by the way), and you do pull it towards you to shift.
Like you said I'll just pull it apart and see what I find, and I have a Year One catalog already on the way
