yeah if the smoke is black then its running rich. Many hondas and acuras smoke when in vtec for a couple different reasons. Sometimes when vtec engages it will smoke blue simply because the larger cam lobe allows more air into the cylinder to get compressed this causes cylinder pressures to rise and if the rings arent in good enough condition to hold the added cylinder pressures it can cause it to burn a little oil. Also when in vtec the computer richens up the mixture some and if it richens it too much the result will be black smoke. If you have black smoke the car is running to rich and isnt running an optimal fuel setting therefore resulting in a loss of power. If you decrease the amount of fuel going into the cylinder (on a motor that is already running rich) you can gain power. Basically what Im saying if youre smoking black you should get the car tuned. If you have a turbo charged or FI or even a REALLY high CR and you are smoking black smoke then dont worry about it running rich has cooling effects on the cylinders and can help prevent detonation (your biggest enemy).
