Synth is thinner oil at the same weight of dino oil. This means that if you have slight leaks, they will become huge leaks. If you have unnoticeable flaws in the gaskets, those too can leak. If you do switch, 2 things. 1) Don't switch back and 2) be vigilant for leaks.
As far as protection, it's hands down the best.
