youre on the right track, but its the rod to stroke ratio you are thinking of. i think it has everything to do with building a reliable motor. when you have a poor RS ratio it gives a lot of stress on the rotating assembly and most important it fatigues the cylinder at a pretty fast rate making them prone to cracking and throwing rods.
