Of course for every $10k 17 second honda there are a few ringers like my buddy Andy. He's got less than $2k into his whole CRX and runs 12.08. No its not a street car (its street legal, but stripped) but still.
I think the main advantage in a mustang being cheaper to make quicker is because of the traction advantage. Look at 10sec89's picture above, the car leaves like an animal but its mostly stock. A Honda in any street legal form would never leave anywhere near that hard, so while the honda and mustang might run similar mph dollar for dollar, the mustang will eat it up ET wise.
