Here is the article:
Paxtons Novi 2000 supercharger is quiet in around-town driving but generates a mild whine as it cranks out 8 psi during full-throttle runs.
Sometimes simplicity is the best recipe for a tasty dish. Such is the case with Paxtons latest toy an 01 Ford F-150 Supercrew thats markedly faster without giving up its great daily-driver appeal. Although a Supercrews stock 5.4L V-8 is no slouch a few extra horsepower is always welcome when hauling gear or towing a trailer.
Paxton Automotive answered this few extra call in the form of 52 percent more power than stock with a stout 310 hp delivered to the rear wheels according to Paxton. The key is the addition of a Paxton Novi 2000 supercharger to cram loads of air inward and a Magnaflow exhaust system to quickly shuttle the spent fumes outward. Around town the supercharged V-8 is docile but mash the gas and it produces considerable boost (about 8 psi) that hits hard during mid- to high-rpm romps. The supercharger is a simple install and tucks under the stock hood with no sheetmetal butchery.
External mods are kept to a minimum and include a billet grille color-matched bumpers and a Snug Top bed cover. The simplicity carries over to the suspension mods in the form of Hellwig anti-roll bars Rancho adjustable shocks and a set of MHT 20-in. wheels shod with Toyo Proxes S/T 305/50VR20 tires. The stock ride height is retained so as not to limit the trucks useability.
WHATS HOT
Big horsepower increase
good handling
no gaudy upgrades
still hauls/tows like a truck should
WHATS NOT
Needs brake upgrade
bedcover hinders large loads
boost should arrive sooner
At the track the Paxton Supercrew delivered great performance in the form of a 1.38-sec reduction in 0-60-mph times and a 5.55-mph increase through the tight slalom course. Test driver Chris Walton noted My best run was made in second gear to exploit the superchargers strong boost. As I charged the last slalom gate I could really get the rear out and steer with the throttle at any point. The Rancho console- adjustable shocks proved they werent just a gimmick as they made a notable handling difference when fine tuning them for each test. Stiffer shock settings worked best for the slalom medium stiffness worked better for the quarter-mile runs while a softer setting delivered a non-jarring ride out on the open road.
The Paxton Supercrew is simple affordable and works well. Its direct approach proves you dont have to sacrifice a smooth ride and good driveability for great performance. And at the end of the day you still can use this truck for what it was intended to be-a truck.
