All the 323/Proteges have been made in Japan. Either in the Hiroshima or Horu plants. This is THROUGH the BJ chassis cars (99-03). The Mazda 3 is the first one not built in Japan.

NOTHING was sourced from Ford on those earlier cars.

If you can show me something that says otherwise, I'll eat my words. Furthermore, when Ford wanted to use the Mazda BP engine in the Ford Escort GT, Mazda didn't even allow them to assemble the motors, but rather, at greater expense, shipped entire long blocks to Detriot. Which furthermore, the Escort GT was the only Escort actually made in the US...the others being built in Mexico, and the build quality is noticeable.
