For ultimate grip specifically for this type of event with no compromises toward street use? I'd go with the Kumho V700. Or, if you want a similar tire that will last a little longer, try the Toyo RA-1. They are reported to grip almost as good as the Kumhos and wear like iron.
If you want a street tire that will work well on the track... hmmmm...
Well, maybe some of the Azenis drivers will offer up a report. They certainly weren't the only tires that started giving up when they got hot out there. I was relatively happy with my Goodyear Eagle F1's, though I know they didn't have near the grip of the Azenis.
Just about anything would be adequate to learn on, though. You know that drill well enough. We're not out to set records or anything, so don't get too wrapped up in having the ultimate tires just yet. There were folks out there (like John Hatton) who were impressing the instructors on their old tired all-season tires.
