not to take sides but in a general since the cam or cams are part of the valvetrain. just because it is not attached to the valve doesnt mean anything. it still accuates the valves . if you buy valves they dont come w/ the springs and retainers but they are part of the valve train as you stated. i dont even see why this is being argued over?
because technically a cam isnt in the valvtrain is connected to the valve train via pushrod/lifters you remove a head on a LS1 to replace the valvtrain te cam stays in the engine hondas just have them intergrated into the head alonmg with te valves hince DOHC.
You can say they are part of the valve train but they arnt they just actuate the valves that are in the valve train. no arhuement i was just explaing what involves rasing your rpm and why things in the head affect this as well as the bottome end compnents.
