Exactly. Unless I am going to be charged or arrested you do not have the right to see my ID. That situation was handled totally wrong.
A bit off topic but Nor do they have the right to search my car. Print this and put it in your glovebox to hand the the officer if you are ever pulled over and "asked" to be searched.

If you feel you have probable cause to search my vehicle, please present your evidence to a duly appointed magistrate for issuance of a legal search warrant to conduct the search. If I am detained as a result of this process and there is no evidence of illegal activity on my part, my attorney will be initiating civil action against you, your department and the city for unlawful detainment and defamation of character by implying that I was taking part in illegal activities. My attorney will also initiate a complaint through the Department of Justice for violating my 4th Amendment Rights under the Constitution of the United States."
