I don't think a spray of water would hurt so long as it wasn't continuous. My friend locked his motor after driving through a deep puddle, so yeah, watch out for those. Just invest in a bypass valve. I think a 40 dollar investment isn't a bad one since your engine and the time to put one in will cost significantly more.
