2 Turbo Questions

1. Can you put a turbo on big muscle cars? V8s and such?
2. Does the performance gain from a turbo setup cause gas milege to go down?

Yes, and Depends on setup.
Typicaly, if you increase the power your increasing the useage of fuel, hence your gas mileage goes down.

Steve.....this is what I got you in here for, have at it ;)

there are a handful of twin turbo v8's running around out there. It just takes some custom fabrication. Personally I don't know of a single turbo v8 out there. If anyone has any links to a single I would love to see that.

In most cases your fuel economy is going to go down. Its hard to make alot of power and still get good gas mileage with any car.

Steve (Dragin) has a single turbo Mustang, for one. There are a few others running around as well.

Yes you can put a turbo on a V-8, Not a problem. Just meat have the right engine set up to take full advantage of it. IE lower compression etc.

Gas mileage... Well that is kinda irrelative when talking about modding any car to go faster. Depending on whether or not it is EFI or carb will make a difference.. EFI even with bigger injectors will not do to bad as far as millage is concern for every day driving as long as you stay out of the boost. but in my case that is kinda tough.:D But if I stay out of it and drive normal, back and forth to work, I get about 22mpg, And have put down 550rwhp and 612rwtq with the old turbo and I have 96lbs injectors.

But the gains of a properly sized turbo on a V-8 are hugh... well worth the time of putting it together.... I will never go back.

Turbo Cars are like hot women. A little edgy, every guy wants one, some guys can't handle them, and if you throw a little alcohol in the mix they'll rock your world!!

I was giong to build a Turbo V8, but then i got a Supra... back home in toledo, i konw of 2 twin turbo V8...

It was a 2001 Cobra, 351 Cleveland, ProEFI system, Twin T66's, custom 3" piping, long tube headers, Water-to-air Spearco located in stock AC/Blower compartment, full interior, ET streets... ran 7's. It was, INSANE. his class rules stipulated no more than 2 power adders and you had to drive a minimum distance of 30 miles to be qualfied in the "Street" class. the guy own's a Salvage yard. He won last years class and they changed the R001z on him... to only ONE power adder allowed, now he either has to change classes to Unlimited Power aadders, or switch to single turbo to compete in his same class... anywho...

I also had a friend w/ a 71 Cuda and a 440 six-pack... the guy he bought it off of had a twin turbo kit for it. The seller said he would include the turbos, manifold, hardware, lines, etc for $1100 extra. He was sayin "hey chris, lemme ask you something... you think i should get the twin turbo kit for this?"

I said "WTF... turbo?"
Hes like "yea, its only $1100"
I said "WTF... $1100?"

anyways, there are complete bolt-on tubo kits for Fox body mustangs... i havent been able to find complete bolt-ons for the SBC but rumor has it that Gale Banks was developing a kit for Chevys.

I wanted to build a Turbo V8 cuz i wanted 600BHP+... a few months later, i realized that a Supra was capable of 600BHP asw well, but it CAME w/ a turbo and all the engine managment.

here was my projected setup, as of 2 years ago:
Sell RX7 for $3500
Use Checking for $1500

1987-1989 Trans Am w/ LB9 Port fuel injection
LB9=sold for $$$
SBC 350, 144 CID Blower, built for boost: $3095 @ PAW
144 CID blower=sold to friend w/ 79 Stingray for $1200
Edlebrock Airgap single plane intake
Street Demon carb, 950 CFM, built for boost: filled floats, bushed shafts
Vortech Carb-box
Custom 1/2" SS header flanges
Weld Els from plumbing/gas shop
Powerstroke Intercooler

alot of my time, alot of wire for my welder.

I dont know if you guys know what Desktop Dyno2000 is, but it projected my setup to produce ~680 BHP/~670 lb-ft... w/ a power curve like a Plateau, coming on strong around 3200 rpm @ 2.0 PR and 75% IC efficiency, gasoline, 8.5:1 compression. i plugged that engine into Dragstrip 2000, into 3rd gen F-body... on 10" wide slicks, 700R4, 3.42's, ran low 10's in typical track conditions....

Desktop Dyno2000 and Dragstrip 2000 is the SHIT. it helped me decide what size/duration cams to use, how far to advance/retard them. you can test out different trannies and cars, change the weight, the Coef. of drag, tires, all that stuff. and you could duplicate those numbers in the Realworld, if everyting is Perfect. If your track conditions were perfect, the driving was perfect, your car was tuned perfectly, etc... if somethign was off, you obviously wont hit the projected numbers. anywho, gettin off topic now...

If i hadnt bought a supra... id be in a 87-89 Trans am GTA w/ a single T66 350SBC and a 700-R4 and 3.42 Locker in the rear... and it'd have a 6pt cage too.

i own a 4 cyl turbo but i can only imagine the power of a V8 turbo, like a mustang or an LS1, its becoming more and more common to see them now a days. my gas milage stays the same, except when i use the loud peddle on the right!!!!! but i still get about 300 to a tank.

Mmm... turbo v8. One of the sexiest engines if done right, imo.
