VLSD Output Shafts Q...
Anyone have experience swapping the output shafts out of / into a dif?? How big a pain in the ass is it? Would you advise someone with reasonably decent mechanical skills to attempt this?
I ask because I have a r200 VLSD with 5-bolt output shafts and I know its a pain to find axles, so as an option I would consider swapping in 6-bolt output shafts. I've done the research on what would be needed as far as which output shafts...j30 or s13/s14 VLSD output shafts.
Depending on the answers, I will post up a WTB for either axles or output shafts (...and probably wait) or maybe even a worn out VLSD.
Thanks,
-Royce

I saw this and it looks pretty straight forward...
David Williams's VLSD install
The thing that gets me in the C-clips just popping off and hanging out in the diff until you put the other output shafts in...just seemed odd.

Insert pry bar, pop flanges out. It takes 2 seconds. You won't break anything. I'd be happy to do it for you if you want.
The hard part is finding 6 bolt VLSD stubs. You can't use the 6 bolts shafts out of your open diff.
I would suggest finding 5 bolt axles. It's going to be easier. You could probably get brand new/remanned ones from autozone.

VLSD stubs are longer (like the one on the far right) to engage the viscous coupler in the center of the diff. If you use open stubs, they'll technically "fit" in the diff, they just won't engage the locking part. Basically it would behave like an open diff.

'92 to mid '94 J30 axles are 5-bolt. Call autozone/advance and see what a pair of remanned axles is gonna set you back. You can turn in your 6 bolt axles as a core, they won't know the difference.
edit* Napa has remanned axles for $60 each.

Good suggestion on Autozone. I think they carry a warranty too. I was pretty certain that finding the VLSD stubs would be hard, but with you guys giving this info I'll post a WTB thread and see.
I'll post up what the axles go for in here just for giggles.
Thanks!

I doubt anyone will want to sell the stubs without the diff. I know I wouldn't.
Just make sure you ask for the right year J30. The later ones are 6 bolt like 240's.

Autozone has right /left for $80 + $75 core...reasonable for considering it has a "limited" lifetime warranty.
Advance doesnt carry them.

Napa has them for $60. And just turn in your 6 bolt axles for the core.
