I too have had a welded diff lock up on me, someone from St Pete gave it to me and on my way home from OSW it started making sweet noises, the next day it locked ON the way to the auto parts store to get gear oil and RTV to put in the new one Ranlet welded up. (Broke Driveshaft, Transmission AND of course the gay-ass diff.) When it locked up I was on a 2 lane road and both wheels LOCKED and started fish tail as if I had Zangief kicked the clutch pedal to the floor and full locked left..if I didn't know how to respond to that it would totally go back to what Tim said: Yeah you'll probably wreck die

OH, and OP if you decide to go the welded route, MAKE Sure you get a reputable welder to do this job. I remember there was a "tech" thread on SFL a few months back talking about some idiot JB welding his diff..

You should have basic car control skills if you are going to put a welded in.

Is this thread still going on?

Here's what I read in the first post: "I'm about to weld my diff for $40 instead of buying a real diff for $500. Will this shitty diff hold up to the $1200 turbo I'm about to buy?"

Priorities. Make them.

dont even remember where i read it now, but the other day i saw "im not rich enough to afford cheap parts."

that also applies here.
one person out of how many says welded is awesome. and look who it is.

ive got a welded and daily drive. i dont mind it. ive also been driving w.o powersteering for awhile. its not that bad it does shread tires both front and rear. but if your planing on drifting you probly can get tires for dirt cheap and already plan on changing tires often so just go for it weld that bitch. say if you have a 50% tread tire on the front expect to change it in 2 or less months. and rain isnt so bad aslong as cords arent showing
