if you disasemble the spring from the strut you can push down on the strut it's self, if it push's down easy and dosnt come back up it's crap, if you push it down and there's a good bit of resistance and it come's back up, then you in good shape.
but on a side note i wouldnt think they would be good due to 90% of the JIC's are swaped around from car to car and normaly are so damn old and have a ton of mile's on them...so dont get your hope's up, but here's hoping there good!
also they are a good starter suspention setup due to there's not a lot you need to know as far as setting ride hight and spring tention.

Keep in mind We are rebuilding Coilover kits IN TAMPA now so if one or two of them are bad you might still be able to make a complete set out of them with a quick rebuild. Rebuilds are only $150 per damper and I inspect all the other components (pillowballs bushings, boots, bumpstops) for wear or update. if they are REALLY old JIC insert based units, while you can't buy the JIC inserts, you can make other brands fit with some modification. I just did a JIC-KONI hybrid build for another customer that brought over some blown JDM coilovers. since there is no USDM source, and JIC told him to trash them and buy new..
