bad experiences jacking car up from rad. support?

j/w if anyone has had any bad experiences jacking their car up by the rad support, ive been doing it a while but some guy told me not to do it, it crumples easy, so just wondering?:nerd:

Hes tell you the truth. The radiator support itself is not very strong and can crumple under the cars weight. You are better off jacking directly from the frame rails or from the jacking points on the side of the car.

RyanS13 03-05-2008 06:53 AM

i know its not that sturdy, but i thought it would be fine, i cant get to the side point because of sideskirt

Sohc4now 03-05-2008 07:37 AM

my friend cracked his radiator lifting from there on a J30

4wheeldriftS13 03-05-2008 07:43 AM

O-o; ORLY?
What about the tow hook in the front?.. :I

jdmpete 03-05-2008 08:13 AM

ive always jacked it up by the core support never had a problem with any of my cars.

oASHo 03-05-2008 08:26 AM

tow hooks are sweet

Mars_302 03-05-2008 08:27 AM

Youd be find to jack there just to get some weight off the car to get up higher so you could get a jack in a real jacking spot. But id never pick a car up off the ground that way.

+Waldo+ 03-05-2008 08:28 AM

i have used the rad support but now ill think twice...

i hate the jack spots on the side cuz you have to use the stock jack or u crumble in that lip...

RyanS13 03-05-2008 09:55 AM

thanks for the help guys...i usually use the tow hooks but sometimes to be more sturdy i would so the core support but ya ill prolly stop now lol

DriftingDJ 03-05-2008 10:00 AM

bad idea, except to raise the car up enough to jack it up from where you are suppose too jack it up at.

RyanS13 03-05-2008 10:02 AM

behind that "lip" is a round portion that you can use to put a regular jack on

I learned the frame rails are weak as hell the hard way on my old car... Pinch welds ftmfw! I believe they sell inserts for regular jacks/jackstands you can buy that will fit into the pinch wells.

shinmei2006 03-05-2008 12:30 PM

oil changes on 3 cars and auto tranny flush and pan cleanout on one of those...all in the usf parking lot lol...thats why i skipped class yesterday (dunno if you went) i was too tired after being in the heat for 2 hours on my back and the constant running to discount and back...

then girlfriend got pissed at me for some stupid shit...and had to deal with that

A good 2x4 under the support is alot better then straight on it, distributes the the weight out a good bit.

RyanS13 03-05-2008 03:44 PM

true, i have to bring some pieces of wood as it is to roll my car on

Epstein 03-05-2008 03:48 PM

I've lifted my car from the core support probably 40 times already. No problems. I use an 8" section of 2x4 between the jack and car to lift around the stock lip. Of course this is just to put it up on jack stands, which I put where the core support meets the frame rails. I'm finally starting to notice a slight deflection in the upper support (where that center brace runs) from the lower support flexing. Next time you're under the car, check it out. The lower core support is as beefy as the frame rails are.

About lifting the car from the hooks or the end of the frame rails, you're not going to find me doing that to a 15 year old car. It puts a metric shit-ton of torque on the chassis. The structure on these 90's cars is weak enough. It doesn't need me loading it unnaturally.

So you're just tossing a 2x4 onto the jack to spread the load and lifting from the radiator support? Where exactly are you putting the jack stands- I vaguely understand what you're talking about, but I like to be more certain than that when it comes to putting my car in the air. You say that you're seeing a permanent deflection in the upper support from lifting it, or just from old age and stress?

I've always worried about lifting this car. For all it's failings my old DSM was much stiffer than this limp noodle 240. I've been jacking this 240 up with the frame rails and putting jack stands under them on those reinforced sections at the front and rear of the car. I've noticed that when the car is up on the jack stands the door hits the striker with a loud clang and doesn't close properly- because the chassis is twisting around it! First time that happened it threw me for a bit of a loop. Nothing like that every happened with my old DSM. Also, it may be my imagination but I could swear that the back left of my car is higher than the back right, whereas the front left is lower than the front right. Maybe it's just sagging springs or maybe "it has so much torque, the chassis twisted off the line" or maybe I should invest in a lift and a garage to put it in before it's twisted into a pretzel.

longfellow2 03-10-2008 11:17 AM

Ive always used the rad support with, but the cup on the jack is twice the size of a normal one.

Though I do notice the chassis used to twist alot when I was on stock suspension. I think one of the rear shocks was blown which didnt help.

Im going to make some fender braces and see if that helps. It looks like it bends alot at the firewall. Strut bars also seemed to keep the over-all chassis flex down when I was lifting it. But it seems just as normal as all the other cars I've jacked-up
