Where do you have your BOV placed?

Default Where do you have your BOV placed?

Been building cars for awhile now, and have been around turbo cars for longer then i can even remember.
with that said i always see/hear 2 different locations.
turbo side or intake side.

i have done both, my blue Z is on intake, my green Z on turbo side.
really havent seen a difference but i only ran 21psi threw my blue Z so far, while the green Z has seen more.

where do you have your BOV's located and why there.


Talking to a few well known tuners i still get different answers.

Hot side in the front air dam...The why is because that's where the guys at XAT decided to put it! Nice and loud when in full boost, I like to scare people...hahaha

I asked the same question a few months back in general forum section.
People said it doesnt really makes a big difference.
Mine's on the cold pipe, no issues.

The hot pipe (before intercooler)

People like to use the hot side on these cars because either it's easy to recirculate or it's easy to add there with a prefabbed hotpipe. I had a very long technical explanation about the differences in location, then I gave up. The idea is that if you have the bov by the throttle plate, when the bov opens, the air will keep flowing in it's normal direction to escape through the bov. If you have it by the turbo, when the throttle plate closes, the air backs up and has to head backwards down the pipes to escape through the bov. There's a bunch of physics involving air mass and restrictions and such, but that's the jist. Take a look at the Greddy cold pipe for S14. The bov pipe faces such that any air that hits the throttle plate has a convenient place to escape.

Also, just a note. Recirculating can also help keep the turbo spooled (ignoring any rich condition because of mafs based systems) because it effectively takes the boost pressure from the pipes and uses it to blow into the turbo inlet. This blowing works just like blowing on a pinwheel, helping keep the compressor spinning.

shouldn't it be on cold pipe? I mean if you logically speaking. Wouldn't there be less wear on the blow off valve if it has cooler air hitting it rather than burning hot air?

Nissans aren't the only one that have BOV.

I know I'm new here :-p but I've put in my wrench time. I don't think there is a real advantage to either side. The entire intake system will depressurize the same amount very quickly no matter where the valve is. My personal preference is hot side, because for some reason in my mind I think that having the "omg too much boost!" safety valve should be before the expensive intercooler. It probably has no technical merit at all, but my .02.

I run mine cold side before BOV, vented to atmosphere

Thats where its located on the DSM I used to have too
