First, if you wanted to go fast(er), you should have gotten the VG30E motor instead, but that's not really helpful.
I'm not really sure what 89-90 240sx parts will match up to your hardbody motor. Your first problem is that your motor isn't carbuerated. It has throttle body injection, if i remember right. That carb-looking thing is actually your mass air flow sensor. That arrangment kinda rules out getting an intake. By the way, the "E" in KA24E stands for injection. You could try bolting on an aftermarket header for an 89-90. It should bolt on to the motor, but I don't know about the steering column clearance, or if it will bolt up to the stock exhaust. An underdrive pulley might free up some HP, as well as a bigger exhaust.

with the hardbody most of the things from the 89 KA in the 240 will improve your performance. Most guys i know with stock hardbodys toss the intake from the 240 on and steal the cam as well. If you are interested in some other stuff aobut the hardbody you can check out nissanminis.com, lots of cool stuff on there, just mostly looks though.
Is it worth building up a single.... I thought they would just blow out fairly quick

Depends. You have to think that all sohc 240sx's are atleast 5 years older than the one in this guy's truck. I've seen some pretty high mileage single cams. I think age is becoming more of a factor now a days.
thanks for the help dudes

well, techincally, a doch head will bold on, u just need to get a timing chain, this will raise compression (HP), then you could do cams, or u could just buy a bigger sohc cam and do as justtruckin' said, add a cold air. P.S. i have a head, cams, and chain find my post in "nissan parts for sale" but if u wanted to do basic on the sohc PDM-racing.com has a cam for the ka24e motor that would bolt on. its all in how much u want to spend, how much HP u want, and how deep into the motor u want to get. lmk if u want to talk about the top end parts i have
