It's a sealed unit. It can wear out. Long time though.. over 100k I'm sure.

if u put abuse on it, it wears out quickly, if one tire is slightly more worn then the other, it will wear it. they dont lock very good. think of it as having a sticky open diff. not worth the money to me personally.

Is there any way to check it without installing it?

There are basic tests. Turn one of the output flange, and the other should follow. Hold the input flange and one output flange and it should be very hard to spin the remaining output flange.

It can fail or wear out from abuse or misuse. That's why some people like the idea of getting the same vlsd out of J30's. You hardly ever see J30's getting abused. Like Funk said, having different sized rear tires will destroy it as well.

So what is it in the VLSD that actually wears out?

its viscous fluid, not oil, it hardens when heated up, aka spinning faster then other side. save ur money and buy a real diff. u wont regret it.
