Check engine light
outa no where my check engine light came on and as from what i can see there isn't anything wrong with the car....and my dad is a mechanic and says he doesn't see anything wrong with the car.... so i'm wondering if it comes on after every so many miles saying that u needa get your car checked up on or what.... and is there any way i can turn it off if there isn't anything wrong....
If you have your catalytic converters taken out, that could be triggering it

you are correct. most cars are set up to have the stupid little light turn on at a predetermined milage, and as such most cars have a secret way of turning the little annoying bastard off. in the back of some chilten labor hour books, the ones you find at shops telling how much you can screw a customer for, has the procedure for all cars in the back. you might search the internet and be able to find this info. its usually disconneting a wire and re-pluggin it in, some are buttons, they are all different. if your dad works at a shop, they might have this book, if so...problem solved. hope this helps.

-pull passenger side kickpanel
-unbolt ecu out of place
-find turnable screw on one side
-turn it fully counterclockwise (light will go off)
-turn it back clockwise
long blinks = tens digit
short blinks = ones digit
count them, there might be more than one.
mine triggered right before 60k thought it was routine maintenance.
they dont light up unless there's a code. mine turned out to be 2 that dont even appear on the list below (83 and 122 - which were MAP sensor and something else - basically emissions/stoich crap that wont matter - ive had my light on for almost 2 years now lol)
you can reset it by following the instructions on the link below which tells you everything. also, if its truly a code, the light will come back on in a few seconds if it isnt fixed. leaving the negative battery cable disconnected for 5 - 10 minutes also resets some of it, i do this after every modification or major maintenance to make sure.

every third time you start your car the engine does a self test. if it finds anything wrong your engine light will come on and will stay on until you reset it or it runs through the test and corrects itself.
