Default eclipse overheating

my bros eclipse ( 98 rs) with 120k miles started over heating out of nowhere , the water pump has been replaced less than 20k miles , there is no leaking , its just evaporating ... he drove it home yesterday and when he arrived he noticed there was no water in the radiator , he also said that the fan is not kickin in when the needle is in the middle but it does after its past it ... is there any sensor that could cause that or it might be the thermostat ? please lmk if anyone has dealt with this before .. thanks a lot ..

Also, check to see if there is air in the cooling system. Try "burping" it. This can be done by running the car with the radiator cap of for about 5 minutes or so, just till it warms up. If the fans aren't turning on, you may need to wire them so that they are always on. Also, is it smoking at all? If so, you may need a new HG.

Coolant temp sensor is probably shot. Replace it along with the thermostat.
