wtf is this???
alright guys i'm stumped my girl has a95 rs (/gs because power options were added) she just picked it up from getting painted on Sat. and now when she is pulling through the rpm range the 5 spd tranny seems to be whinning it has plenty of fluid and its not making any grinding noises and it is driving no different than it did before... i'm not saying the paintshop did anything either cause that doesn't make sense i just can't figure this damn thing out

Sure its the transmission? Could be the PS tensioner pulley or something around that area. Those do tend to whine on 420a's and they get worst over time from moisture, water, etc. anything that gets into the bearings. It's about $120 part from the dealership, I should know I've bought one and replaced it on the wife's car. I would make sure exactly where its coming from first, a sound you hear inside the car can be coming from anywhere.
what is your girlfriend's name and phone number? maybe i could come by her place and look under the hood.
ok just kidding. if its not mechanical, maybe its something to do with newer aerodynamics of the car. was there any bodywork done? for the longest time after i bought my car i thought there was a grinding on the side of the engine, til i realized it was the wind rushing over the side mirror.
just something to take into consideration. if everything seems to be working fine, it could be that.

the noise happens in all gears and is actually worse in the lower gears, as far as aerodynamics, i really down't think thats coming into play at 10 - 20 mph... the noise isn't as bad in 5th... but you can still here it a lil.... as far as me being sure its the tranny.... i won't really know until its up on the lift tonight

It's doing it under load. Have someone sit in the car and have it in neutral and have them hold the gas around 1,500rpms to see if it does any sort of sound and look around the hood. If that car was outside during this storm we had then I'm almost sure its the tensioner pulley. Any bad rain storm/moisture in the air will cause the tensioner pulley on 420a to start making screeching noises and it will not go away... there's temp fixes but it will come back 2x worst. Just let us know. Could be the input shaft bearing on the transmission, could be the throw out bearing, or like I've been saying the tensioner pulley for the PS/AC. Turn on the A/C see if it does the noise. I'm just trying to help.
