Default What's a FC engine worth?

I normally when I see RX-7s in LKQ they don't have engines in them. I'm guessing there is quite a demand based on that. Today I saw one intact in a smaller yard and I'm thinking about pulling it to turn a profit. Only thing is I need to figure out if it's worth my time, especially since this chain doesn't charge flat rate. High value items go for way more. A 3.3L Nissan engine out of a 1998 Mercury Villager goes for over twice what the same series 3.0L engine goes for out of an 1988 Nissan 300ZX.

depends on how badly someone needs it. Odds are the engine's the reason it's in the yard, so it'll most likely need rebuilding. I sold a known blown one for $75 on CL. But I've seen them priced @ ~$1200 on CL for turbo ones w/ "low miles".

Probably not worth your time, short answer

Really blown rotaries are only worth $75? I mean I figured that it was probably in rough shape since I know they have a reputation for needing to be rebuilt every 60K but I've also heard they're easy to rebuild since there are only like 13 major parts compared and I would assume cheap if you do it yourself.

They are simple engines. There arent many moving internal pieces. A master rebuild seal kit runs 1200-1300 bucks and doesnt have oil control seals. The apex seals (rings for you piston guys) are about 200 a set for aftermarket "stock" seals. THe rotors (pistons) are 600 a piece, and the housings (cylinder walls) are 600 a piece. If there is anything wrong with any one of the 600 dollar pieces i just mentioned... this "cheap rebuild for a profit" could easily accelerate out of control. Do you need a 1300 master gasket kit? no. Lots of guys buy the gaskets that absolutely need to be replaced and rebuild their engines for about 700 bucks (including apex seals). Now keep in mind there are quite a few other, smaller, parts that will add up quickly like apex seal springs, corner springs, stationary gears, bearings, eccentric shaft, thermo wax... etc etc. If your not into the rotary scene... i would suggest just leaving it there as everyone else has... If you do pick it up, take it to lakeland on saturday night, sit it in the back of the truck at the track, and offer it "as is" for whatever you think you can get for it. Make it easy on yourself tho and leave all the accessories in the scrap yard. THey most likely wont be in working condition, and the guys at the track will have no interest in them anyways, so you might as well save the $.

Ouch that seems to contradict everything I've heard about rotaries. Thanks anyways, I'll stay out of the rotary scene for sure now lol

You CAN do it for cheaper.... but that might explain alot of why theyre always popping seals.... Just saying. It can get expensive if you do it right. It can also be done on a budget, if you know what your doing and do it right... But for the average person who hasnt gotten into it before, its not really worth the hassle. But do tell where the yard is. I could use a few body/trim pieces...
