Where I live, you'd be insanely lucky to get a used car that even runs for under 1000$, never mind passing safety if it's from out of province/state. I paid 2000$ (ouch I know) for my 95 Honda base model DX Civic (with power steering, cassette player, and a dash clock as options! Luxurious!) that had next to no miles on it, I kinda hate it since the city I live in is known by the surrounding areas for their ricers with old Civics and Subaru Imprezas, which consists mostly of kids who put loud exhausts on their stock base model ecoboxes. My Civic is however stupid cheap to insure, around 100-150$ a year, cheap on gas (I put like 5$ every week or 2, I don't drive that far though), and Hondas were also insanely popular back in the 90's, there are many parts made, and lot's of junked cars to get old parts from, so parts pricing and availability is no problem. I've had it for about 4 years now, and I have under 300$ invested in parts, including buying a brand new gas tank which seems to be a common thing to replace in these parts, I currently need to replace a couple ball joints and a tie rod, which are like 10-20$ each new. Not bad for a 20 year old cereal box toy, and it does it's job, gets me to and from work and school.
