Default motor question

ok this is gonna sound really dumb but whatever. my friend has a 91 ls motor that knocked before he took it out. i know that it could be a bad rod or maybe a blown bearing? what else could it be? also anything that could cause a knock, could make the block bad? any info or opinions would be great, im think of using the block and just wanna make sure its not messed up.

much thanks
kris

HEY IF THE VALVES KNOCKED IN THE ENGINE BEFORE DOESN'T MEAN THAT THE ENGINE IS MESSED UP. HERE ARE A FEW REASONS OR THINGS IT COULD BE OR DO.1) CHECK THE OIL IN THE ENGINE IT COULD BE AS SIMPLE AS THAT LOW OIL LEVEL IN IT COULD CAUSE THAT.2) THE VALVES NEED ADJUSTMENT TO DO IT YOUR SELF IT'S A PAIN IN THE BUTT.3)THE REST OF THE ENGINE IS FINE NO PROBLEM WITH IT THERE SHOULDN'T BE ANY THING ELSE.

it could have a hole in it if he thru a rod ...but other than that a block cant really go bad ...then again if he spun a main bearing...then you would have to give it a lineboring<--think thats whats its called...but yea thats it...
