any recomendations? I've seen them as low as $35 and some over $150. Does it decrease the shift nob height or just make it so you dont have to move the shifter very far to get into the next gear?

i learned on a short shifter and they are def better in my opnion
basically it takes less to get into the next gear. i had never used a normal shifter before then i had to drive my drunk brothers 200 ford and i felt like my arm had to go a mile before i could get into the next gear. So def go short throw i havent heard anyone say they dont like it!

depends on which one you buy... you can get either way or both... a $35 will work fine though, most are the same height, only with a shorter throw. which probably what your going for.

thanks for the help. just wonder why such a difference in price if they do the same thing. the worst was when I drove a mustang GT i thought i was driving a semi or something you can forget shifting fast in that. the civic isnt nearly as bad but i would like to have it feel more precise and something i can almost slap into gear. i drove with a short throw before in an srt4 and it was so nice to just move your wrist shifting.

I always use a short shifter but it is all personal preference.

The price difference is in the quality and the type of metal used. A cheap ebay one that you get for 20-40 bucks will break on you. Take it from someone who has experienced it TWICE. They WILL BREAK...consider that your warning and don't get mad if you end up on the side of the road somewhere at 2am.

As for the more expensive ones, they are made out of a virgin aluminum which is MUCH stronger than the cast crap ebay sells. Skunk2 is a good brand but my money ALWAYS is with B&M when it comes to shifters. I like the heavier all steel shifters more than the aluminum ones though.

ya my short shifter is a skunk 2 its pretty nice
and all i have to use is by pointer finger and i can snap it out of gear with little ease
and when your going fast its easier to shift it into the next gear which could determine a race

whats with the bends in them? some seem straighter and others have a kink to them

I had a B&M short shifter, just a straight up and down bar with a shift knob on the top, and it seemed like it had a longer shift but it shifted very solidly, now I have a shifter that came out of an integra type r, its taller and the shifts seem shorter. The old B&M shifter I had just sat too low.
