Thumbs up Spoon Sports B Series Motor Specs

Following are the specs for the infamous Spoon Sports B series motor as queried by the masses.

Here are the details of the Spoon Sports engine/longblock:

It is a brand new 98 spec R longblock. The internal components are JDM OEM Honda with the following exceptions: it is fully balanced and blueprinted, it uses the Spoon Sports 2 piece headgasket for a compression ratio of 11.3:1, it uses the Spoon Sports oil pump which is stronger and more effective than the OEM Honda oil pump and it should put out around 180hp at the wheel.

What does "balanced and blueprinted by Spoon Sports'' mean?
All engine components are weighed to 0.01 grams precision. Engine components such as pistons and rods are balanced, they all weigh within 0.01 gram of each other. Spoon Sports is able to balance these components because they order/weigh/sort hundreds of pistons, rods, etc. from Honda and sort them into balanced sets. Bolts are torqued within 0.01 N/M of Honda specs.

One might ask, what does balancing and blueprinting do? It makes the engine run incredibly smooth, reduces power loss due to inefficiency, power delivery is extremely smooth, power is higher across the entire rpm band as compared to a Honda assembled engine, engine/throttle response is much better, the engine revs smoother/faster and is able to withstand high rpm better, and finally engine life is improved considerably especially in race environments.

Why does Spoon Sports offer this engine? Spoon Sports core philosophy is in balance: good power, good driving feel, and long life. This engine offers all. Circuit racing requirements differ from drag racing; an engine with the aforementioned characteristics is preferred in circuit racing over a high power, less reliable engine which might be favored in drag racing. These engines are frequently bought by pro race teams competing according to FIA Group N regulations which require stock internal motors. Hence they need an engine which has maximum effectiveness and efficiency using stock parts.

Who should consider a Spoon Sports engine? Pro/amateur racers requiring a motor in stock trim (Fits FIA Group N regulations). Circuit racers/enthusiasts who want an optimized stock motor for circuit use. People who want a new stock or reliable motor with decent power.

Who shouldn't consider a Spoon Sports engine? Drag racers. People on tight budget. People who want a high power setup, N/A or Turbo. People who don't care about or aren't sensitive to subjective intangibles such as driving feel or engine response.

What is the price of a Spoon Sports engine or block? It is priced comparably to the price of a new B18C5 longblock/shortblock from Acura considering the work Spoon Sports has put into it (Keep in mind it is a brand new Longblock/Shortblock). Price fluctuates with supply and demand, although Spoon Sports engines aren't common here, keep in mind that they are very common and popular in Japan and Asia. Expect price to increase over time as the supply of B18C components dwindles.

Does/why doesn't Spoon Sports offer a high power engine? Again, Spoon Sports philosophy is balance, to Spoon Sports high power is only worthwhile if the engine can endure the stress of a 24 hour race. To Spoon Sports, a street tuned engine needs to be comfortable and reliable while delivering improved power and driving feel. Spoon Sports has built and sold high power engines with 200+ horsepower to the wheels, high compression kits and stroker kits including a 2 Liter stroker kit for the B18C. However, the reliability and engine life of these engines still isn't good enough for Spoon Sports standards hence why Spoon Sports does not offer them anymore. Keep in mind Spoon Sports does not participate in drag racing events.

A little background information on Spoon Sports for those who aren't familiar with the company:

Spoon Sports Co., Ltd. is a Japanese engine tuner and parts manufacturer specializing in cars made by Honda Motor Company formed in 1988 by Tatsuru Ichishima who is the founder and president. Their concept is to create vehicles that provide "Total technology" and "Real comfort". The company logo of Spoon Sports is a play of words on Tatsuru Ichishima's name. Ichishima's first name is Tatsuru, and the Japanese name for crane is Tsuru, hence the logo of a crane. "The company name Spoon comes from an impregnable fortress of a corner at Suzuka circuit 20 years ago." (from the Spoon Sports catalog)

The company tunes and races Honda vehicles in numerous endurance races, and, additionally sells aftermarket parts to automotive enthusiasts. Spoon Sports provides many aftermarket parts for Honda cars. These include powertrain, suspension, aero-parts, wheels, drivetrain, braking system, cooling system and so on. Notable items that have gained immense popularity would be Spoon caliper kit, Spoon Carbon fiber items (such as hoods, tail-gate spoilers, lips and door mirrors), Spoon SW388 wheels, Spoon N1 Exhaust systems amongst others.

Some of the races Spoon Sports has competed in include: The Tsukuba 9 Hours Endurance Race, 24 hours Nurburgring, 25 hours of Thunderhill, USTCC (United States Touring Car Championship).

The founder, Ichishima Tatsuru was originally a racer. So just like Honda themselves, racing has always been in Spoon Sport's blood. The first car that Ichishima-san raced was a Honda Civic.
Spoon was founded to specialize in tuning Honda engines in Takaido, Suginami, Tokyo along the Kōshū Kaidō Avenue. In 1988, Spoon started house development of a racing computer for use on Honda vehicles. Spoon designs and builds both major and minor components for Honda engines for use on Spoon Sports racing vehicles as well as for sale to the general public.
In 1996, Spoon began selling honda B Series Engine assemblies which Spoon precision balances and blueprints to ensure optimum performance during endurance racing. Since then, Spoon Sports have moved on to tune other Honda engines like the venerable K20A from the Civic/Integra and the L15A from the Honda fit/Jazz.

In 1997, Spoon moved to a brand new building in Ogikubo, Suginami. They also began providing "Engine Lectures" as a part of their customer service program.

In 2001, Spoon opened "Speed Shop Type-One" across the street from the Spoon headquarters. This shop specializes in modifications to Honda's "Type-R" vehicles and other performance oriented Honda's which include the Civic Type-R, Integra Type R, Accord Euro-R and Nsx-R. However, Spoon has also modified non-R vehicles like the Civic SiR, Honda S2000, Honda Legend and the Honda Fit/Jazz.

Type-One is Ichishima's vision of how a Spoon Sports dealer should be. And that vision is the offer of a "complete tuned car, not just individual parts thrown in without consideration of whether they will work in harmony or simply interfere with each other." Also, Ichishima wants to make it known this shop was not created to sell parts, but to provide customers with Type-One's installation skills and know-how of Spoon products.
