how to rotate cam sprocket for timming?

I guess on this 89 civic LX I have to have the cam sprocket mark that says up, pointing up for the timming to be correct with the crank pully at the top dead center mark on its compression stroke..... the timming belt broke and Im installing a new one and was wondering whats the esiest way to rotate the cam sproket so Its alligned? If I can only rotate the cam sproket by havving the belt on, then to set timming correctly should I rotate the crank as it turns the cam sproket so the up mark is facing up and then take the belt off then rotate crankshaft back to TDC s #1 piston on compression stroke?

you probably have bent valves in your head. check that first before putting on timming belt.

checked. no bent valves, now back to the question

i use an old timing belt and wrap it around the one sprocket and then you can turn it easily with all the excess belt, a new belt would be fine, but i like to use old stuff as tools instead of new stuff

12mm wrench, just make sure once the new belt it on you give the bolt a good tightening to make sure it didnt come loose.

starts right up. nice. thanks every one. I have never delt with a belt car. only my ka24de......Im alot more confident in timming now. I had to keep the spark plug in a little loose to see if it was on its compression stroke. did the plastic coat hanger trick for when its TDC. no timming cover or marks on pulley for help.

there were no marks on the crank pully? there should have been some on the sprocket at least. either way, alot easier than that KA.
